CITIESMODE ONLINE: Development Management in Practice

June 27, 2018 By Citiesmode

This online course is aimed at officers who are new to development planning or considering a career in development management in England. This introduction to development planning provides the essentials filling the “practice” gap that can occur between university studies and a first day on the job; for example, the difference between knowing what a Section 106 agreement or planning condition is and knowing how to find out information about these and what they mean in a one of several large planning files.

For managers this can help with inductions of your new starters and ensure a consistent base of knowledge. It can also avoid you or your principal planners being taken away from a heavy case load to train officers in general matters. This allows you and your principal officers to focus your training efforts on an authority’s specific processes and practices.

Drawing on experts from across the sector the course first explains the role of Development Management before turning to consider:

■ Different types of planning application
■ How to use local plans and development plan policies
■ Carrying out on site assessments – including in historic environments
■ Dealing with consultation responses
■ Design resources
■ Use of planning conditions & Section 106 agreements
■ Making recommendations for decision makers

This course is rich in relevant and highly practical advice that can help recently qualified development management officers do their jobs.

Sara Dilmamode, Citiesmode Team takes learners through the modules featuring experts from across the planning and development including Royal Borough Kingston’s Lisa Fairmaner and Rob Krzyzowski, Brent (formerly Royal borough of Kensington and Chelsea) on the local plan, Rodney Keg (Hackney Council) on design and Mike Kiely (Mike Kiely Planning + Regeneration and Chair of the Planning Officers Society).
